By Tony Dunphy

Businesses have several options available in terms of business communications service. The services of choice for most businesses are IDSN 2 or IDSN 10/20/30 telephone lines because they offer flexibility and availability of add on features including 100 Number DID (Direct In Dial) range. Many businesses are getting away from the traditional telephone service lines and choosing IDSN business phone lines instead.

You want to remember that ADSL or SHDSL Broadband services are not available with any of the IDSN phone lines. You will need to purchase a dedicated stand alone PSTN phone line if you need to use those services.

It's important to understand some of the jargon when you are talking to your PABX phone system provider. You need to be aware that BRI is Basic Rate for IDSN 2. The Primary Rate or PRI for IDSN 10/20/30 is also referred to as E1. The reason these terms are important to know if because each needs a different and very specific network interface card on your phone system.

While it is possible to convert a system from PSTN to IDSN 2, you may need a new system if you wish to convert to IDSN 10 or Multi line services. You can also choose to take PSTN business phone numbers to IDSN 2 or IDSN 10 standard, but you cannot take them to a DID range because this system is a sequenced in 100 number blocks the network allocates.

There are many IDSN phone line options available for all size business. Those who require 2-8 lines should choose IDSN 2 but if you need 10, 20, 30 or more lines choose IDSN 10/20/30. If you need more than 10 you want to choose Multi Line service which also offers many options. With the new Multi Line services you can also choose exactly the number of lines you need instead of having to pay for lines you do not need. This is an economical choice for smaller organizations that have very strict communications budgets.
