What does Unlocked really mean when purchasing a smartphone?

By Chris Sissy

An unlocked smartphone indicates one of two things; you can use it with any provider or that you are free to install any application on it. With the cost of present day smartphones running to several hundred dollars, the smartphone suppliers and the network carriers must present some tempting programs in order to get people to upgrade their phone. The most prevalent method is to provide the mobile phone completely free or at a huge discount and in return you agree to a contract where you agree to pay a minimum amount of money monthly. The sting in the tail is that while you get the newest mobile phone worth several hundred dollars, it is often locked to the service provider you signed the contract with. Consequently, if you wish to switch carriers or switch to a month by month plan when the plan expires you'll have a hard time taking your smartphone with you.

The quickest way to find out if the phone is locked to a network carrier is to insert a sim card from a different carrier and see if you get a signal and can make and receive calls. If you cannot then you probably possess a locked phone. The 'lock' isn't a physical lock but a program inside the OS? This software determines that the network service provider is valid and blocks any attempt to get connected to a different service provider.

It's possible, although a bit risky, to unlock a phone either by entering a sequence of numbers from your keypad or hooking it up to a personal computer which has software to erase or reprogram the core OS. You won't come across any retailers supplying this service but the small, independently owned cell phone shops may offer this service for a fee if you ask them. However, be aware that if you choose to unlock your phone for use on another provider it probably voids the warranty. There's always the chance it may erase the device memory completely and then you'll have a block of plastic and metal about as useful as a brick.

One reason why you might want to get the device unlocked, and one of the driving motives many people attempt to do so is if you're travelling in another country for any amount of time you want to keep your smartphone but utilize a local sim card to lower your charges on cell phone calls, text messages and data. A locked phone will not provide the option to accomplish this hence the only alternative is to get the phone unlocked.

Another type of locking is the restrictions carried out by the manufacturer. Apple iPhone is famous for this since Steve Jobs made a decision that he doesn't want folks messing with the operating system or adding unapproved programs. This has given rise to the expression 'jailbreaking' for the iPhone. Lots of people attempt to break away and unlock their iPhone by means of jailbreaking it. Nonetheless, performing this voids the warranty and support.

In contrast, Google's Android mobile phones are open source and gives the freedom and flexibility to modify anything. Programmers have the freedom to develop and install virtually any app which many argue makes the Android a first-class operating system because there's no need to unlock it, jailbreak it or circumnavigate limitations that have been applied. In spite of this, most network providers will probably lock the device to their network and you may want unlocking services from a local cell phone retailer.
