Understanding Cloud Services: Cloud Storage and Cloud Backup

By Bryant S. Cole

There are many types of cloud services available. It can be tough though, figuring out what you need. Basically if you can figure out what the different services are and what they can do for you, then you can decide what will work for your specific needs.

Cloud backup is a very important piece of the cloud storage puzzle. Cloud backup refers to the process of having your data updated. This means not just saving files in one folder on your computer but instead having them backed up to a remote server on a regularly scheduled basis.

Cloud backups typically occur on a schedule that is determined by the computer user. They can be scheduled to occur at night or on the weekends when a user may not be using the machine. Old files can be retained on a cloud server as long as the user wishes, generally in increments of about a month. Files stored on cloud servers will be encrypted and won't just be downloaded when you need them. In fact, they will have to be restored to your computer.

Files saved on a cloud service will be saved as you save them to your hard drive. This means you'll have full access to them via a quick download. This is a great option for users who only use cloud services to store copies of important files such as PDF documents for quick and easy access. Cloud storage services will keep all of your scanned documents in a secure location. You can also back up all of your family pictures, music, and video files on a cloud server. Plus you can have access to all of these files regardless of where you are and as long as you can connect to the web.

In business, using a cloud backup service can really save the day if there is some type of disaster. Some will allow for servers or a PC to be fully backed up and then all of the data can be put on another computer. It means that a business can be returned to an up and running status in record time. The replenishment of data can be as fast as just a few hours, even if the original computers, laptops or servers are unable to be fixed or have been stolen..
