Virgin media have declared their intent to enter the world of Voip with their new 'SmartCall' service. The service will enable customers to make use of the unlimited calls feature of their home talk plan of their mobile phone anywhere in the world via a Smartphone.
There are, however, a couple of requirements - such as users requiring a wireless internet connection as well as a Smartphone app - in order to manage the service and detect whether or not a SmartCall is possible from the users location.
Virgin's executive director Graham Oxby believes that: "Smartcall will stretch the home telephone cord all the way wherever you might be - whether in a coffee shop in Cornwall or on a beach in Bali."
He continued to explain that: "This revolutionary service is an example of just how technology can make our lives easier as well as giving customers incredible value".
And if early trials of the service are anything to go by (and Virgin certainly believes that they are) the service should prove a great success that will be welcomed with open arms when it is opened up to all customers across the country at the start of 2013.
Until now, people have generally used Voip services such as Skype to negate the issue of expensive international calls, but Virgin hope to put a significant dent in their market share with their new initiative.
And although there is every chance that their new service will tempt some people away from the Skype model, with so many other companies offering discount Voice Over IP service packages, it seems that even - or especially - if the service proves successful, competition from all corners will increase as others attempt to copy the successful model.
And when you stack Virgin's stats against their competitors in the Voip arena, it is clear that they still have a lot of ground to make up against specialist Voip providers who can offer much technical insight and value for money.
So if you're looking for a Voip provider who knows the industry and can offer unrivalled technical service and support, choose a specialist with a proven pedigree and an ITSPA Quality Mark for good measure.
